-- You will reach a vil-lage in the evening; and when you get there, you will see two inns opposite to each other, one of which is very pleas-ant and beautiful to look at: go not in there, but rest for the night in the other, though it may appear to you to be very poor and mean.'

-- Then he went his way, and in the evening came to the village where the two inns were; and in one of these were people singing, and dancing, and feasting; but the other looked very dirty, and poor.

-- 'I should be very silly,' said he, 'if I went to that shabby house, and left this charming place'; so he went into the smart house, and ate and drank at his ease, and forgot the bird, and his country too.

-- When I formerly hinted to you something of this in a letter, you were pleased to answer that you were afraid of giving offence; that people in power were very watchful over the press, and apt not only to interpret, but to pun-ish every thing which looked like an innuendo (as I think you call it).

-- Have not I the most reason to complain, when I see these very Yahoos carried by Houyhnhnms in a vehicle, as if they were brutes, and those the rational creatures?

-- I do, in the next place, complain of my own great want of judgment, in being prevailed upon by the entreaties and false reasoning of you and some others, very much against my own opinion, to suffer my travels to be published.

-- He was a very learned man.

-- To tell the honest truth, when the right word would not come, it was generally replaced by a very powerful adjective.

-- In connection with the sciences there are many almost unpronounceable names--names very much resembling those of Welsh villages; and my uncle being very fond of using them, his habit of stammering was not thereby improved.

-- As I said, my uncle, Professor Hardwigg, was a very learned man; and I now add a most kind relative.

-- It had a thrill of its own too: a queer vibrating thrill inside the body, a final spasm of self-assertion, like the last word, exciting, and very like the row of asterisks that can be put to show the end of a paragraph, and a break in the theme.

查尔斯·狄更斯的《小杜丽》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- The very dust was scorched brown, and something quivered in the atmosphere as if the air itself were panting.
