本专业的学生首先要完成两个季度的生态理论和其应用方面的核心课程学习，然后将选择一个更为具体的方向来完成本学位的要求。可选择的方向包括：农业生态环境、保护生态、生态系统和景观生态学、生态毒理学研究、环境政策分析、人类生态学、综合生态、海洋生态学、生理生态学，和恢复生态学。本专业提供了很多不同了环境研究机会。如果学生的兴趣不在已有的兴趣中，也可以根据生态学选修课程制定自己的计划。 通过本专业的学习，毕业生能够具备生态学相关的专业知识和技能，可在城建、园林、农业、林业、风景区等部门和企业从事规划、设计、环保、水利、施工、园林植物繁育栽培、养护及管理、科研管理、科学新闻等工作，或在政府部门及民间机构从事生态监测和动物保护工作，还可以在大专院校、各类研究所从事教学及科研工作。
