Transcript: Submit directly to the UT Graduate School: Official transcripts of all college and university coursework Personal Statement: The Statement of Interest is the applicant’s opportunity to describe why he/she is interested in pursuing graduate studies in architecture at the University of Tennessee. The essay should be comprehensive and to the point. It can also serve to help describe images included in the portfolio submission. Recommendation Letter: Each candidate is expected to be able to provide no fewer than three letters of recommendation from persons either in the architectural field, or that can vouch for the applicant’s skills, maturity, and work ethic. These letters shall be printed on letterhead, and signed by the author. All letters of recommendation must be sent directly to the Graduate College of Architecture, and clearly reference the applicant by name and relationship. Letters of recommendation are extremely important, so care should be taken in who is asked to write them. Portfolio: The contents of the portfolio of work can vary greatly from applicant to applicant. Images submitted may include photography (digital or analog), montage or collage (digital or analog), images of 3-D artifacts such as sculpture or craft, or images of drawings, paintings, or other forms of 2-D artwork. Again, the number of images is inconsequential compared to the quality of the work in the images. A few quality images (as few as 3) will go further than a litany of poorly composed or carelessly selected images. The Selection Committee is looking for thoughtful composition and a critical eye.
