詹姆斯·费尼莫尔·库柏的《最后的摩根战士》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- In this manner they proceeded, for many rods, in a silence that was only interrupted by the rippling of the water, as its eddies played around them, or the low dash made by their own cautious footsteps.

-- A short and apparently an embarrassed silence succeed-ed this remark, which was interrupted by the scout calling to them, aloud, to enter.

 

华盛顿·欧文的《睡谷的传说》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- There was something in the moody and dogged silence of this pertinacious companion that was mysteri-ous and appalling.

罗伯特·路易斯·史蒂文森的《金银岛》里,有这样的句子出现:

-- For in these fits he was the most overriding companion ever known; he would slap his hand on the table for silence all round; he would fly up in a passion of anger at a question, or sometimes because none was put, and so he judged the company was not following his story.

-- Then it struck sharp on the inn door, and then we could hear the handle being turned and the bolt rattling as the wretched being tried to enter; and then there was a long time of silence both within and without.
